River Dream eBook DW Davis
The story of Mike and Rhiannon is a sweet love story set in the 1970's. Growing up in that era I immediately connected with both of them.Mike is a ninth grade boy in love with his best friend. They grew up together and are almost inseparable. The summers spent on the pier of the lake fishing together from sunup to sundown and the never ending games of pinball were things I could remember from my past also.
First love is a hard thing, especially when the other person can't love you the way you love them. Sometimes you don't know your best friend and sometimes they don't know themselves. Growing up is a time of exploration and learning. It is about being there for each other in the good and the bad times. And sometimes it is about giving into fate and destiny.
The underlying message of this fantastic book is that friendship trumps all. Love really does know best. Even if it doesn't happen exactly the way you expect, it will get you.
The camping, the boating, the characters and the growing up all involved engage in is a delightful way to spend an evening. I read this book in one sitting while listening to the rain hit my hotel window. The memories that came rushing back to me when I finished reading this were a welcome addition to that night. The adventures of Mike and Rhiannon mimicked parts of my youth so closely that sometimes I thought I was reading about my life.
Kudos to author D.W. Davis. I cannot wait to read his second book.

River Dream eBook DW Davis Reviews
'River Dream', by Douglas Davis is YA story appropriate for ages 13-17. This story follows a financially secure young adult as he negotiates the complexities of youthful relationships to come of age as a young man. And although following the social events of school-age kids may at times seem tedious, I paused to recall the irony ... Youth all was not always new and exciting. And though there was a certain tedium, I must add that the Author maintained the fine balance in this Young Adult read that should be appreciated and... I do appreciate his effort. Therefore, I am recommending this read to Young Adult because of the insight it provides, rather than the typical effort to 'market to and appeal' to the prurient and sensational interest of the targeted Young Adult reader. This work has value that a Young Adult can learn from... I am giving this work Five-Stars. There are many instances a YA reader may learn from and that go to managing complex relationships ... to the benefit of the reader, if interested. G Mitchell Baker, Author, "Lethal Believers The Innocents' (2012); "Lethal Believers DVM' (2013) and 'Soccer Tommies Baseball Mommies (2014).
"River Dream" by DW Davis is a very sweet story of first love and the complications that undoubtedly go with it.
The story is set in the 1970's, a time that is much simpler and easier than today. The descriptions of this time period are spot on and bring the reader back in time to memories of that era.
It begins with Rhiannon and Mike in their teenage years as best friends since grade school. Mike is in love with Rhiannon, but she is not interested. They are best friends and according to her, cannot be more than that.
Through the trials and tribulations of their teenage years, expressed with a keen eye for detail of the time period, Mr. Davis delivers a wonderfully told story. The characters are realistic, the plot is heartwarming and the ending is exactly what I had hoped for.
For a first novel, this was very well-done and I look forward to reading the next books in this series.
Absolutely terrible.
Nostalgic and very well written. Eagerly moved on to Book 2 - Dreams Change.
River Dream is an awesome summer read! Its is a book perfect to read at the beach, on vacation or lazing at home. I loved the characters and the way Michael showed how he cares for his friends. It was easy to feel like you were at camp or on the beach. I also could feel Michael's emotions as the writer takes the reader through the high school years. It is a book I will read again and again.
I thoroughly enjoyed that this was written from the boy's perspective, as well as by a male author. It adds a lot of different elements that one doesn't often see in the more traditional romance stories.
An added bonus is the richness that is detailed in the surroundings. Set in the recent past, the setting is familiar to anyone who resides or vacations to Coastal North Carolina. Though the author litters descriptions of well-known locations, it is not so detail oriented that a reader unfamiliar with the area is lost.
While in my perfect world, the subject of alternative sexuality would not have ended the way it did, the tone of acceptance by the main characters is refreshing. It presents one of the gentler, non-sexualized, sides of very real interactions between friends that readers of all ages can appreciate.
Rhiannon and Mike are best friends since tricycle days, only by age 13, Mike's sure he's in love......forever. Rhiannon says best friends are best friends....period. This sweet and thoughtful tale - from Mike's point of view - follows the pair and their friends from age 13 thru 18, along with all the trials, tribulations, and angst of all teens everywhere. The story, while a young adult novel, read quite well to this social security aged mom, and I never felt that I was reading a YA book. My only nitpick is the maturity level of the teens portrayed. Where were they when my son was growing up? Maybe it was his upbringing, along with his secret inheritance, but even at 13, Mike seemed far older emotionally than most of the 22-25 year olds I know. Eagerly looking forward to reading the next two books in the serial to see where adulthood takes the gang.
